2982                                     JOINT RESOLUTIONS

I. Steers, Jr., House Office Building, Washington, D.C.
20515.

Approved May 16, 1978.

No. 40

(House Joint Resolution 96)

A House Joint Resolution concerning

Use of Discarded Glass Containers

FOR the purpose of requesting the State Department of
Transportation to study the feasibility of using
discarded glass containers in roadbed construction.

Discarded glass containers, primarily throwaway
bottles, are a significant part of solid waste products
which must be disposed of annually, usually in landfill
areas.

A process is in existence, whereby waste glass can be
used in base courses under asphalt pavement.

If the many tons of waste glass can be utilized in this
manner, it would serve a twofold purpose, that is, alleviate
solid waste disposal, and provide a substitute for mineral
aggregates in road construction.

If the substitution of waste glass can be
satisfactorily substituted for mineral aggregates in road
construction, it would also result in a savings of a natural
resource; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, That the
State Department of Transportation be requested to conduct a
feasibility study of the use of waste glass in roadbed
construction; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the
Maryland Department of Transportation.

Approved May 16, 1978.
