JOINT RESOLUTIONS
Our National Anthem FOR the purpose of requesting leaders of the Sports'
Associations and Media to precede all sports events
with the playing of our National Anthem. WHEREAS, It has been a proud tradition in these
United States to play the National Anthem before all
sporting events; and WHEREAS, Before the Super Bowl XI football game
America the Beautiful was substituted for the National
Anthem; and WHEREAS, Although America the Beautiful is an
inspiring and patriotic song, nevertheless The Star
Spangled Banner was adopted by the United States Congress
as our National Anthem; and WHEREAS, The Star Spangled Banner commemorates the
bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. In
September of 1814, protected only by their earthen
bulwarks, the brave patriotic defenders withstood
intensive bombardment from the British who were in the
Chesapeake Bay and out of range of the Fort's cannons.
Finally after 20 hours of this bombardment, the
courageous protectors held their ground and by dawn's
early light our flag was still there. The British attack
was repelled. Unlike our new Nation's Capitol, Baltimore
had been saved from destruction; and WHEREAS, There is no substitute for bravery; there
is no substitute for patriotism; and most of all there is
no substitute for our National Anthem; now, therefore, be
it RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, That
the leaders of the Sports' Associations and Media are
hereby requested to require the playing of out National
Anthem before all sporting events; and be it further RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution be sent to
