the completion of one full year of service. Increments
shall begin the July 1 of each year in which they are
effective. The treasurer shall certify the salaries and
annual increments of this subsection. If any deputy
resigns or is fired and subsequently is rehired as a
deputy, he may either be paid as if he were hired for the
first time or receive credit for previous service.
(2) Any person, other than the Sheriff,
enumerated in PARAGRAPH (1) who has completed
successfully a program in law enforcement training
recognized by the Maryland Police Training Commission or
has reached the age of 35 with five years service shall
receive $500 annually in addition to the salary provided
in PARAGRAPH (1).
(3) The County Commissioners shall furnish
the Sheriff's office with not [more] LESS than [six]
SEVEN automobiles, and shall pay all necessary operating
expenses including but not limited to, gasoline, oil,
insurance, and repairs[, and shall replace these
automobiles with new ones at least once every three
years]. THE HARKED AUTOMOBILES SHALL BE REPLACED EVERY
TWO YEARS AND THE UNMARKED AUTOMOBILES SHALL BE REPLACED
EVERY THREE YEARS. The Sheriff and deputy sheriffs are
entitled to an expense allowance for travel to be paid
monthly at the rate of [10] 12 cents per mile actually
traveled, on vouchers submitted by the Sheriff to the
County Commissioners of Cecil County, in the form they
specify. The Sheriff shall submit with the vouchers an
affidavit sworn to by him upon personal knowledge showing
for each day of the month just passed the number of miles
each vehicle used by him and his deputies has been driven
in the performance of the duties of his or their office,
as determined by him from a daily check of the odometer
readings of the respective vehicles. A mileage allowance
shall not be allowed in the event automobiles are
furnished to the Sheriff and deputies by the County
Commissioners. The Sheriff's office shall also receive
an appropriation of $1,500, to be used for special
investigations and employees, subject to the approval of
the County Commissioners.
(4) The Sheriff may appoint additional
temporary deputy sheriffs if necessary for the public
safety but only after he has secured the approval of the
County Commissioners of Cecil County. The County
Commissioners shall allow reasonable compensation for
these temporary deputies, but they shall not serve longer
than the [case] SITUATION actually requires.
(5) Subject to the approval of the County
Commissioners, the Sheriff may employ four clerks or
dispatchers at a salary to be set by the County
Commissioners.
[(6) All employees covered by this section
are declared to be employees of Cecil County for purposes
