LAWS OF MARYLAND
Transportation, of the Annotated Code of Maryland (As
enacted by Chapter 14 of the Acts of the General Assembly
of 1977) be and they are hereby repealed and reenacted,
with amendments, to read as follows:
Article — Transportation
21-309.
(b) A vehicle shall be driven as nearly as
practicable entirely within a single lane and may not be
moved from that lane OR MOVED FROM A SHOULDER OR BIKEWAY
INTO A LANE until the driver has determined that it is
safe to do so.
21-604.
A person may not:
(a)
(2) Turn a vehicle to enter a private road
or driveway or otherwise turn a vehicle from a direct
course or move it right or left on a roadway[,] OR FROM A
SHOULDER OR BIKEWAY ONTO A ROADWAY, unless the movement
can be made with reasonable safety; or
21-1205.1.
(b)         (1) If there is a [usable bicycle path] DESIGNATED BIKEWAY PAVED TO A SMOOTH CONSISTENCY AND ADJACENT TO A ROADWAY or a [paved] shoulder PAVED TO A SMOOTH CONSISTENCY [adjacent to a roadway] a [bicycle rider] PERSON OPERATING A BICYCLE shall [ride on] USE the
[path] BIKEWAY or shoulder and may not [ride on] USE
WHERE THERE IS A BIKE LANE PAVED TO A SMOOTH SURFACE OR A
SHOULDER PAVED TO A SMOOTH SURFACE, A PERSON OPERATING A BICYCLE SHALL USE THE BIKE LANE OR SHOULDER AND MAY NOT RIDE ON the roadway[. ], EXCEPT IN THE FOLLOWING SITUATIONS:
(I)    WHEN OVERTAKING AND PASSING
ANOTHER BICYCLE, PEDESTRIAN, OR OTHER VEHICLE WITHIN THE
BIKEWAY BIKE LANE OR SHOULDER IF THE OVERTAKING AND
PASSING CANNOT BE DONE SAFELY WITHIN THE BIKEWAY BIKE
LANE OR SHOULDER; (II)   WHEN PREPARING FOR A LEFT TURN AT
AN INTERSECTION OR INTO AN ALLEY, PRIVATE ROAD, OR
DRIVEWAY; OR (III)  WHEN REASONABLY NECESSARY TO LEAVE
THE BIKEWAY BIKE LANE OR SHOULDER TO AVOID DEBRIS OR
OTHER HAZARDOUS CONDITION..
(2) A PERSON OPERATING A BICYCLE MAY NOT LEAVE A BIKEWAY BIKE LANE OR SHOULDER   UNTIL THE MOVEMENT CAN BE MADE WITH REASONABLE SAFETY AND THEN ONLY AFTER
GIVING AN APPROPRIATE SIGNAL.
