No. 65

arrangement, "Sweet Roses of Morn", by Phil Embury, was
carried on page 4 of volume 1 number 1 in the fourth
issue. At the St. Louis mid-winter meeting, the first
written constitution was approved. The first district
organized was Michigan. It had six chapters. Its
purpose was to stage quartet contests.

In 1942, Geoffrey O'Hara's, "The Old Songs", was

accepted as the Society's official theme song. A song

arrangement committee was formed to publish

Society—approved arrangements. At the     Grand Rapids
Convention, judging by category was initiated, but not

with separate category judges. The Code    of Ethics was
adopted.

In 1943, the National Board approved 24 members as
"qualified" judges.

In 1944, the first judging by category began. The
Society emblem was adopted, designed by Dick Sturges,
based on sketches submitted by Joe Wolff. The first
Canadian chapter was chartered in Windsor, Ontario. The
Society became international.

In 1946, the first school for judges was held at the
Cleveland Convention. The Chapter Reference Manual and
first officer text was approved and published.

In 1948, the 10 year history, "Keep America
Singing", by Deac Martin was published by the Society.

In 1950, the Armed Forces Collaboration Program was
adopted at the Washington, D. C. mid—winter meeting. The
Society quartets started making trips outside of the U.
S. to entertain troops.

In 1952, the concept of "Barbershop Craft", was
first tried out in the Alexandria Virginia Chapter.

In 19 53, the first contest for choruses was held at
the International Convention in Detroit, Michigan and the
contestants were selected by District Presidents.

In 1954, the first International Chorus Champion was
crowned.

In 1955, the "President's Workshop", was started.

In 1956, the Harmony Heritage Series of barbershop
songs was initiated.

In 1957, the Buffalo Bills opened in "The Music Man"
on Broadway.

In 1960, the Harmony Education Program (HEP) weekend
schools were started at instigation of Rudy Hart and
later developed into week—long Harmony Colleges under the
direction of Bob Johnson, the Director of Music Education
