sentiment against this highway being continued beyond the
Beltway through Prince George's County to Washington, D.
C.; and
WHEREAS, Such a proposed extension will have an
extremely damaging effect on Prince George's County; and
WHEREAS, It has been indicated that consideration is
being given to the complete destruction of extremely
valuable parklands, green space and recreational areas
which serves thousands of residents involved; and
WHEREAS, The continuation of I-95 will bring with it
severe environmental damage involving air pollution,
noise pollution, flood control problems and the like; and
WHEREAS, Many of the local governing officials have
indicated their grave concern over the destruction I—95
will cause; and
WHEREAS, There may be substantial deterioration of
values of homes while increasing the value of commercial
properties; and
WHEREAS, The governing body of Washington, D. C,
has indicated it is not contemplating the completion of
the Northeast Freeway which would have been a connecting
link to I-95 through Prince George's County; and
WHEREAS, The Secretary of Transportation of the
United States has adopted the position of the City
Council of Washington which eliminated this highway; and
WHEREAS, The Maryland Department of Transportation
has been advised not to proceed with I—95 construction in
Prince George's County by the citizens' Steering
Committee of the Western Prince George's Transportation
Alternatives Study; and
WHEREAS, the Maryland Secretary of Transportation
has requested, and the Secretary of Transportation of the
United States has approved the deletion of the I—95
project in Prince George's County from the Federal
Interstate Highway System; now, therefore,
SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That new Section 211S be and it is hereby added
to Article 89B — State Roads, of the Annotated Code of
Maryland (1969 Replacement Volume and 1975 Supplement) to
read as follows:
