than Fifty Dollars ($50.00), and shall stand committed
until both fine and costs are paid. If any vacancy
occurs, in the office of judge or clerk of election, it
shall be filled by appointment by the Mayor alone. The
compensation for each judge or clerk who serves shall be
Five Dollars ($5.00) per day.

RESOLVED: That Section 16-17 of Article II of the
Charter of Brunswick, Title "Elections", Subtitle
"Election Returns; Filing of Certificates", be repealed
and re-enacted with amendments so as to read as follows:
The judges of election at every election for either Mayor
or Councilman or both, or at any election where any
proposition or question is submitted to the decision of
the voters, immediately after the polls are closed, shall
count the ballots cast, [in each ward for which they were
appointed judges.] The clerk shall tally the votes cast
for each candidate and the votes cast for or against any
proposition or questions submitted to the voters, after
which the judges shall make, on blanks furnished by the
Mayor and Council of Brunswick and file a certificate
setting out the whole number of votes cast fin each
ward], the number of votes cast for each candidate and
the number of votes cast for and against any proposition
or question submitted to the voters. The certificate
shall state that the person receiving the highest number
of votes cast for Mayor is elected Mayor, the person
receiving the highest number of votes cast for [the]
Councilman [in each ward] is elected Councilman [from
that ward] and the proposition or question submitted to
the voters receiving the approval of the majority of
votes cast is carried. As the ballots are counted, they
shall be strung by one of the judges. When the counting
is finished such ballots together with the tally sheets,
shall be put into the ballot box and the box shall then
be securely locked. The judges certificate, the key to
the ballot box, the ballot box and the poll book [shall
be delivered to the two judges at large, who] shall
within a reasonable time after the closing of the polls
BE [return] RETURNED [the ballot box, key and
certificate] to the town clerk.

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a complete and exact
copy of the aforegoing Resolution be posted at the
Brunswick City Hall for a period of at least forty (40)
days commencing on February 12, 1974; and that a fair
summary of the aforegoing Resolution be published in the
Frederick News—Post at least four (4) times at weekly
intervals during the aforesaid forty (40) day period, and
the aforegoing Resolutions shall become a part of the
Municipal Charter of Brunswick on the fiftieth (50th) day
following their adoption unless a Petition requesting a
referendum on the matter is submitted to the Mayor and
Council of Brunswick on or before the fortieth (40th) day
