JOINT RESOLUTIONS

established by the Secretary of Agriculture; and

WHEREAS, Provisions have been made through the Child
Nutrition Act of 1966 to expand the food services program
by including nutritious breakfasts. Special Food Services
Program for Children, and milk at a reduced price or at
no charge; and

WHEREAS, Federal and State funding is available to
provide a nutritious meal which is free or at a reduced
price to children who are unable to pay as determined by
the State Agency following the U. S. Department of
Agriculture guidelines; and

WHEREAS, Nutritious meals for elderly citizens are
available through the school food service program; and

WHEREAS, Nutritions foods are foods which provide
significant amounts of essential nutrients, and which are
not debased by excessive amounts of sugar, fat and
potentially harmful amounts of food additives; and

WHEREAS, The Maryland State Department of Education
has expressed concern for the health and well—being of
Maryland children by adopting a Resolution that
"nutrition education shall be a part of the Health
Education Program from kindergarten through grade
twelve"; approved the curriculum guide, "Health Education
— A Curricular Approach to Optimal Health"; supported
nutrition education workshops for teachers and recognized
the nutritional goal of school meals as providing
significant contribution toward the daily dietary
allowances as recommended by the National Research
Council for children of various age groups; and

WHEREAS, Other allied professional organizations,
parents and other citizens have expressed concern about
the availability of "empty calorie" or nonnutritious
foods during the school day; and

WHEREAS, Studies have been conducted which indicate
the need to provide guidance for teenagers and others in
the selection of snack foods that contribute nutrients to
the day's diet and emphasized the need for increased
consumption of milk, milk products and fruits and
vegetables; and

WHEREAS, Food misinformation is a concern of
professional organizations and Maryland citizens; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, That a
Task Force composed of allied professional organizations,
parent and other citizen groups and student groups be
