58                                          LAWS OF MARYLAND                                 Ch. 36

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That Section 40(s) of Article 10 of the Annotated Code of
Maryland (1968 Replacement Volume and 1972 Supplement), title "Attorneys at
Law and Attorneys in Fact," subtitle "State's Attorney," be and it is hereby
repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

40.

(s) In St. Mary's County, the State Attorney's salary is fifteen thousand dollars
($15,000.00).

The State's Attorney may appoint a competent secretary who shall be paid a
reasonable salary by the County Commissioners of St. Mary's County upon
vouchers submitted by the State's Attorney.

The State's Attorney may appoint an assistant State's attorney. The assistant
State's [attorney's] ATTORNEY shall be paid an annual salary as determined by
the County Commissioners, but in no event less than seven thousand five hundred
dollars ($7,500.00).

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall take
effect July 1, 1973.

CHAPTER 37
(House Bill 696)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37(i) of Article 87 of
the Annotated Code of Maryland (1972 Supplement), title "Sheriffs," subtitle
"Compensation and Duties," to increase the salary of the Sheriff of Dorchester
County, except for office holder during present term of office.

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That Section 37(i) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of
Maryland (1972 Supplement), title "Sheriffs," subtitle "Compensation and
Duties," is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

37.

(i) The Sheriff of Dorchester County shall receive an annual salary of [$7,700]
$13,000 to be paid monthly, and be allowed the actual cost of the maintenance of
automobiles and the county jail. He shall appoint a chief deputy sheriff and one
assistant deputy sheriff who shall be paid such compensation as the County
Commissioners may prescribe. The Sheriff may appoint such other deputies as
may be approved by County Commissioners and who shall be compensated as may
be prescribed by the County Commissioners. The Sheriff and his deputies shall
serve all process, both civil and criminal issued by the Circuit Court of Dorchester
County. The County Commissioners may authorize the appointment of a jail
matron.

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That the provisions of this
Act shall not be construed to extend or apply to the Sheriff in office on the
effective date of this Act, but the provisions of this Act shall take effect with the
next term of office.
