which persons sentenced to imprisonment in the Anne Arundel
County Detention Center may be granted the privilege of leaving
actual confinement during reasonable hours for the purpose of work-
ing at gainful employment, and to make such provisions for the pay-
ment of the offender's lawful obligations, after payroll deductions
required by law, for support of his dependents, restitution, payment
of fines, court costs including repayment to the county for assigned
counsel, and such amount determined to be the cost to the county of
providing food, lodging and clothing for the offender, from the
monies earned by him as the court shall deem reasonable and proper.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1969.

CHAPTER 321
(House Bill 612)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendment, Section 223 of
Article 16 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1966 Replacement
Volume), title "Chancery," subtitle "Minors' Recoveries in Tort,"
to raise the minimum amount recovered in tort to be paid to a
trustee under Article 16, Annotated Code of Maryland, for a minor.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 223 of Article 16 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1966 Replacement Volume), title "Chancery," subtitle "Minors'
Recoveries in Tort," be and the same is hereby repealed and re-
enacted, with amendment, to read as follows:

223.

It is the public policy of the State of Maryland that any substan-
tial sum of money paid to a minor because of a claim, action or judg-
ment in tort should be preserved for the benefit of the minor. When
a minor, or any person, such as "next friend," by whom or in whose
name any claim or action is made or brought or judgment obtained,
for or on behalf of said minor, in tort, is entitled to receive a net
sum of [$1,500.00] $2,000.00 or more because of such claim, action
or judgment in tort, the person responsible for the payment of the
money shall make payment by check made to the order of

"............................................, trustee under Article 16, Annotated Code

(name of trustee)

of Maryland, for ............................................, minor." No other act

(name of minor)
shall be necessary to constitute the person named a trustee.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1969.
