a yea and nay vote supported by three-fifths of all the members
elected to each of the two houses of the General Assembly, the same
shall take effect from the date of its passage.

(House Bill 524)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37(e) of
Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1964 Replacement
Volume and 1968 Supplement), title "Sheriffs," subtitle "Compen-
sation and Duties," increasing the salary of the Sheriff of Caroline
County.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37(e) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1964 Replacement Volume and 1968 Supplement), title "Sher-
iffs," subtitle, "Compensation and Duties," be and the same is hereby
repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

37.

(e) The Sheriff of Caroline County shall receive an annual salary
of [four] six thousand five hundred dollars [($4,500)] ($6,500)
and shall be allowed his necessary expenses for mileage in con-
nection with his official duties and for boarding and keeping prison-
ers at the county jail. He shall appoint a deputy, who shall receive
an annual salary of not less than two thousand eight hundred dollars
($2,800), and a matron-cook for the county jail, who shall receive
an annual salary of not less than [one thousand eight hundred
dollars ($1,800) ] two thousand five hundred dollars ($2,500). He
may appoint such additional deputies as may be necessary, with the
approval of the County Commissioners as to number and compen-
sation.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That notwithstanding any-
thing to the contrary, no such salary increase shall become effective
until after the term of the Sheriff presently in office.

Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1969.
