twenty-five thousand dollars ($25,000) per annum. The State's
Attorney shall devote his full time and attention to the duties of
his office as State's Attorney and shall not engage in the private
practice of law at any time in any jurisdiction during his tenure of
office.

(2)    The State's Attorney may appoint a deputy State's attorney
and [six] eight assistant State's attorneys. The deputy State's
attorney's salary shall be determined by the State's Attorney in
his discretion, but shall not exceed [seventeen thousand five hundred
dollars ($17,500.00)] twenty-two thousand five hundred dollars
($22,500).
The assistant State's attorney's salaries shall be deter-
mined by the State's Attorney in his discretion, but none shall
exceed [fourteen thousand dollars ($14,000.00)] eighteen thousand
dollars ($18,000).
The deputy State's attorney and the [six] eight
assistant State's attorneys shall devote their full time and attention
to the duties of their offices and shall not engage in the private prac-
tice of law at any time in any jurisdiction during their tenure of
office.

(3)    The State's Attorney, the deputy State's attorney and the
assistant State's attorneys, or any of them, shall present cases to
the grand jury and perform such other acts and duties in relation
to the grand jury as are necessary and proper. The salaries of the
State's Attorney and of the deputy and assistant State's attorneys
include such services as any of them perform before or in behalf of the
judges of the Circuit Court, justices of the peace or judges of the
People's Court of the county in preliminary hearings or trials in
criminal cases.

(4)    The State's Attorney may appoint [five] seven clerks at
such salary as he may fix provided that no such salary shall exceed
[eight thousand dollars ($8,000.00)] nine thousand five hundred
dollars ($9,500).

(5)    The State's Attorney may appoint a special investigator,
who shall be directly under the supervision of the State's Attorney
and perform such duties as the State's Attorney may designate from
time to time. The special investigator's salary shall be determined
by the State's Attorney in his discretion, but shall not exceed ten
thousand dollars ($10,000.00). The special investigator shall devote
his full time and attention to his duties as special investigator and
shall not engage in other employment during the time he is em-
ployed as special investigator.

(6)    The salaries of the State's Attorney, the deputy State's
attorney, the assistant State's attorneys, the clerk and the special
investigator within the limits herein prescribed shall be included
by the State's Attorney in his annual budget submission to the
County Council and shall be paid by the county. In addition to the
compensation provided for in this section, the State's Attorney, for
the operation of his office and the performance of his duties shall
be entitled to a reasonable expense
