CHAPTER 447
(Senate Bill 472)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 690 (b)
of Article 27 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1968 Supple-
ment) , title "Crimes and Punishments," subtitle "Places of Refor-
mation and Punishment," subheading "Department of Correctional
Services," sub-subheading "Institutions," to provide that the De-
partment of Correction shall have the authority to utilize State
Police Barracks for housing of prisoners, where convenient and
practical, and to correct errors therein.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 690 (b) of Article 27 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1968 Supplement), title "Crimes and Punishments," subtitle
"Places of Reformation and Punishment," subheading "Department
of Correctional Services," sub-subheading "Institutions," be and it is
hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

690.

(b) Notwithstanding any of the provisions of this Article or any
other law to the contrary, on and after June 1, 1967, judges, in the
sentencing of convicted persons [(a)] (1) for any offense for which
the provisions of this Article or any other law requires the imprison-
ment to be served at any one of those institutions enumerated in
Section 689 of this Article or [(b)] (2) any offense for which prior
to June 1, 1967, the sentence was made for whatever reason to one of
those institutions in Section 689, shall in all such cases sentence such
persons to the jurisdiction of the Department of Correction. All such
persons shall be committed to the custody of the Commissioner of
Correction and delivered to him for imprisonment. Thereafter all
such persons shall be held, confined in, assigned to or transferred to
such of the institutions and facilities under the jurisdiction of the
Department as the Department from time to time may order, includ-
ing State Police Barracks where such use is convenient and practical.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
July 1, 1969.

CHAPTER 448
(Senate Bill 473)

AN ACT to add new Section 700C to Article 27 of the Annotated
Code of Maryland (1967 Replacement Volume, 1968 Supplement),
title "Crimes and Punishments," subtitle "Places of Reformation
and Punishment," subheading "Department of Correctional Serv-
ices," sub-subheading "Prisoners," to follow immediately after Sec-
tion 700B thereof, to provide that prisoners may be authorized to
leave an institution for the purpose of seeking employment; and to
further provide that individuals or small groups of prisoners may
