Dent Clk of the prsentmts The Grand Jury for the body of this County yesterday (viz) ye 15th of this Instant Janry made return of ye foresd Indictmt. endorsed on ye revers side Billa Vera. Signed pr Jno Lane fforeman To which sd Indictmt this day read in open Court the sd Jno Taylor pleaded not guilty – Whereupon Comand was given by ye Worll Court, that the sheriff of the County afd Should bring here twelve good & lawfull men of his Balywick that the matter in hand might be the better understood, A List or Pannel whereof are thus returned viz. John Porter, John Virgin, Robt.Down, Tho: Gordon Wm Henry, Hough Porter, Richard Webb, Pearce Bray, Cornelius Morris, James Atkinson, Martin Trontham, Wm Haupt 12.= who being legally Sumoned, returned & Sworn upon the holy Evangelists, having heard the foresd Indictmt read, the examination of Six Evidences on behalf of or Soveraign Lord the King upon their Oaths agt the sd Taylor, Likewise the sd Jury did also deliberately heare ye Defence of ye sd Taylor as also those four following Perecepts or Certificates read in Court, receives their Charge and are Sent forth &ca. — — — — — These may Certifie that whereas I George Watt was desired to give the Certainty of my knowledge of a kind of person Elizabeth Cowin is, that she is a Contentious prson & is well known and to my Certain knowledge to make lyes & Contentions & Slanders upon her Neighbours which am ready to make appear, and make oath as Wittness my hand this 11th day of November 1695 George Watt. November 11th :1695 These may Certifie whome it may Concern that I Jane Watt will maintain that Elizabeth Cowing is a prson of an evil Temper for Slandering lying & laying evil Reports upon all her Neighbours for I to my Certain knowledge did hear Elizabeth Cowing Say & Swear that she would be revenged upon Ann Taylor, she and the sd Taylor having Some quarel, a butcherly dogg his dayhter to go and say any thing against her this discourse wee had about one year & half from this instant, & it was after they had the quarel the which is the trueth I can testifie upon oath if occasion Serve as Witness my hand the day & date above mentioned the marke of W Jane Watt.
November 9th 1695. These may Certifie whom it may Concerne that I Cornelius Ward & Margarett Ward doth declare we doe to our Certain knowledge know Elizabeth Cowing to be a Woman of A Base mind, & much given to make lyes, Contentions & Strifes and Slanderous reports amongst her Neighbours, and this is what wee can Say & Swear if thereunto required as Witness our hand the day & year above mentioned the marke of Cornelius Ward the marke of Margarett Ward
