AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Sections 36 and 37
of Article 26 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1966 Replace-
ment Volume), title "Courts," subtitle "Circuit Courts for the
Counties—Court Stenographers," to provide for the appointment,
salaries and expenses of court stenographers in the second judicial
circuit of this State.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Sections 36 and 37 of Article 26 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1966 Replacement Volume), title "Courts," subtitle "Circuit
Courts for the Counties—Court Stenographers," be and they are
hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

The judges of the second judicial circuit of this State are hereby
authorized and empowered to employ two [competent] stenographers,
one to serve in the respective courts of said circuit located in Cecil
County and one to serve in the respective courts of said circuit located
in Caroline [, Kent, Queen Anne's] and Talbot counties.
37.
The salary AND EXPENSES of each stenographer shall be no less
than six thousand dollars ($6,000.00) per year from the first day of
July, 1961, plus reimbursement for expenses. The county commis-
sioners of Caroline [, Kent, Queen Anne's and Talbot counties shall
each pay one thousand five hundred dollars ($1,500.00)] three
thousand dollars ($3,000.00) towards the sum for the salary of the
stenographer serving in the court of second judicial circuit
located in said counties. Said payments shall be made in quarterly
installments from the first day of July, 1961. The County Commis-
sioners of Cecil County shall pay the salary of the stenographer
County. The boards of county commissioners which are liable for the
payment of said salaries have the authority to increase said salaries
in their discretion. The sum of not less than six thousand dollars
($6,000.00) per year shall be supplemented by reimbursements for
traveling and other expenses PAID BY THE COUNTY COMMIS-
SIONERS OF THE COUNTY IN WHICH THE STENOGRAPHER
SERVES AND IF THE STENOGRAPHER SERVES IN MORE
THAN ONE COUNTY THESE PAYMENTS SHALL BE SHARED
BY THE VARIOUS COUNTIES IN WHICH HE SERVES, IN
SUCH PROPORTIONS AS MAY BE AGREED UPON BY THE
RESIDENT JUDGES OF THE COUNTIES IN WHICH HE
SERVES.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That it is the intent of the Legis-
lature in the enactment of this provision that if the court reporter
now serving the four counties of Kent, Queen Anne's, Talbot and
Caroline is appointed by the judges to serve in Talbot and Caroline
counties as herein set forth, he shall be paid not less than the amount
he received as salary immediately prior to the effective date of this
Act.
