1628 JOINT RESOLUTIONS
Whereas, The fishery resources of this area have been declining
over several decades; and,
Whereas, The Middle Atlantic Bight has been shown to be one
of the great fishery regions of the United States; and
Whereas, There has been a great increase in foreign fishing pres-
sure in this area; and,
Whereas, There has been no sustained finfish research program
throughout the region comparable to that of the North Atlantic
and the South Atlantic Regions as well as the Gulf and the Pacific
Regions; and,
Whereas, No state in the Bight is in a position to carry out a
program; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the Governor
of Maryland, be requested to increase financial support to allow
further research by the Department of Chesapeake Bay Affairs on
fishery problems; and, be it further
Resolved, That the Maryland representatives in the United States
Senate and House of Representatives be requested to support a pro-
gram of providing sufficient funds for the U. S. Bureau of Com-
mercial Fisheries to conduct a minimum of two ground fish survey
cruises a year in the Middle Atlantic Bight and to reproduce and
distribute the resultant data; to allot sufficient funds to the Fish
and Wildlife Service to continue and expand its studies on fish eggs
and larvae in the Middle Atlantic Bight, with such efforts to be
coordinated with similar efforts of the States and other relevant
agencies; and, be it further
Resolved, That copies of this Resolution be sent to the Governor
of Maryland, the United States Senators from Maryland, the Mary-
land members of the House of Representatives, and the Chairman of
the Department of Chesapeake Bay Affairs.
