1002                            LAWS OF MARYLAND                       CH. 541

(1)   The conduct of topographic, geologic, hydrographic, and
geophysical surveys.

(2)   The preparation of topographic, geologic and other types
of maps to meet specific needs.

(3)   The preparation of reports on the extent and character of
the State's geology, mineral and water resources.

(4)   The Bureau of Mines as set forth in Sections 487 through
674, inclusive, of this article.

(5)   The Division of Archaeology as set forth in Section 110B
through 110K, inclusive, of this article.

[5] (6) The examination of applicants for certificates of
competency as mine foremen, assistant mine foremen, and fire bosses.

[6] (7) The investigation and recommendation of plans and
policies for the protection of the waterfront of the State against
erosion and deposition, and the cooperation necessary for carrying
into effect plans for the development of the waterfront property
of the State.

Sec. 2 And be it further enacted, That new Sections HOB to
110KL, inclusive, be and they are hereby added to Article 66C of
the Annotated Code of Maryland (1967 Replacement Volume), title
"Natural Resources", subtitle "In General," subheading "Maryland
Geological Survey," to follow immediately after Section 110A thereof
and to be under the new subtitle "Archaeological Resources," and
to read as follows:

Archaeological Resources
110B.

It is unlawful for any person to excavate, appropriate, injure or
destroy any archaeological site situated on lands owned or con-
trolled by this State except with the permission of the Maryland
Geological Survey.
NOTHING CONTAINED IN THIS SUBHEAD-
ING SHALL BE CONSTRUED TO ABROGATE OR SUPPLANT
ANY OF THE POWERS OF THE STATE ROADS COMMISSION.

110C.

The Maryland Geological Survey may grant permits for archaeo-
logical excavation of archaeological sites on lands owned or con-
trolled by this State, to any person or institution who or which in
the judgment of the Survey is properly qualified to conduct such
an excavation for the gathering of objects and materials of historical
or archaeological value or interest. The Survey from time to time
may adopt and promulgate reasonable rules and regulations for
carrying out such excavations designed to assure the proper safe-
guarding and preservation of such objects and materials and to
preserve them for the citizens of Maryland. No archaeological exca-
vations shall be carried out under such a permit except for the
benefit of reputable museums, institutions of higher education, or
other recognized scientific or historical institutions or societies, or
both, with the view to increase knowledge and appreciation of such-
objects and materials.
