"Sheriffs," subtitle "Compensation and Duties" be and it is hereby
repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

37.

(d) The Sheriff of Calvert County shall receive an annual salary
of $6,000 and $2,500 for all expenses. The said Sheriff shall appoint
[two] three FOUR deputy sheriffs THREE to serve at the pleasure
of said Sheriff and under his direction AND ONE TO SERVE
UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE STATE'S ATTORNEY'S
OFFICE. Each deputy sheriff shall receive an annual salary in the
amount of $5,000 and an allowance for expenses in an annual amount
of $2,500. The deputy sheriff SHERIFFS appointed after the effec-
tive date of this Act shall be between 22 and 48 years of age. He
THEY must, within six (6) months of his THEIR appointment, take
a course, of not less than two weeks duration, of police training, or
its equivalent, and thereafter take such course of training annually.
The deputy sheriffs appointed at the time this Act takes effect shall be
required to take a two weeks training course in police work or its
equivalent, before March 31, 1968, and annually thereafter.
In addi-
tion to the salaries above set forth, the Sheriff and deputies shall be
reimbursed for actual expenses incurred for trips outside the
territorial limits of Calvert County up to a sum not to exceed
$15.00 per trip.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act is hereby declared
to be an emergency measure and necessary for the immediate
preservation of the public health and safety and having been passed
by a yea and nay vote supported by three-fifths of all the members
elected to each of the two houses of the General Assembly, the same
shall take effect from the date of its passage.

(House Bill 996)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 3(f) of
Article 25 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1966 Replacement
Volume), title "County Commissioners," subtitle "General Pro-
visions," authorizing the County Commissioners of Kent County
to establish a merit system for county employees.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 3(f) of Article 25 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1966 Replacement Volume), title "County Commissioners," sub-
title "General Provisions," be and it is hereby repealed and re-
enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:
