SPIRO T. AGNEW, Governor                     1709

The Committee is authorized and requested to seek information and
make recommendations looking toward a source of funds which will
make the Commission's Maintenance Fund self-sustaining and make
unnecessary the annual transfer of construction funds for highway
maintenance purposes, and be it further

Resolved, That representatives of the State Roads Commission,
State Fiscal Research Bureau and other State agencies are hereby
requested to lend such aid and assistance to such Committee as may
be necessary to assist it in its study and determinations, and be it
further

Resolved, That such Committee is requested to submit its report
and recommendations to the Legislative Council on or before
October 1, 1967.

(Senate Joint Resolution 39)

Senate Joint Resolution requesting the State Roads Commission of
Maryland to officially name the Chesapeake Bay Bridge the Wm.
Preston Lane, Jr. Memorial Bridge.

Whereas, the erection of the bridge spanning the Chesapeake Bay
from Sandy Point to Matapeake was conceived and accomplished by
the administration of the late Governor Wm. Preston Lane, Jr.
through the efforts exerted by him during his term as Governor of
the State of Maryland; and,

Whereas, the erection of such bridge was visionary and has proven
to be of inestimable benefit to the people of the State of Maryland
in that it promoted the economic, cultural and historical attributes
of the State; made scenic and expeditious access possible for the
touring and commercial public in their travels between the eastern
and western shores of Maryland and the District of Columbia, and
from the standpoint of economic development, commercial
activity and the pursuit of recreation united this geographically
divided State; and,

Whereas, the Honorable Wm. Preston Lane, Jr., during his life-
time was a man of impeccable character, a scholar and practitioner
of the law, a man of military bearing and experience, a statesman
of the highest stature and an outstanding Governor of this State;
and,

Whereas, his untimely death is a great loss to the State of Mary-
land and to the people thereof; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That this body
expresses its recognition of the great and unusual contributions
which were made by the late Governor Wm. Preston Lane, Jr. to the
welfare of the State of Maryland and to the people thereof in
memorializing his visionary attributes and accomplishments by
