942                                LAWS OF MARYLAND                       [CH. 679

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That new Sections 29(c) and 110(c) be and they are hereby added to
Article 52 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1964 Replacement
Volume), title "Justices of the Peace", sub-titles "Docket" and "Trial
Magistrates System", respectively, to follow immediately after Sec-
tions 29(b) and 110(b) thereof, respectively; and that Sections
108(21) and 119(a) of said Article of the Code, sub-title "Trial Mag-
istrates System", be and they are repealed and re-enacted, with
amendments, all to read as follows:

29.

(c) Provided, however, that in Washington County, and notwith-
standing any other provisions of this Article, the records of the jus-
tices of the peace and magistrates courts shall be kept by the clerk
of the courts on a continuing and uninterrupted basis and retained
by the clerks.

108.

(21) There shall be six trial magistrates, two of whom shall sit
at Hagerstown and receive an annual salary of [$3,000.00] $5,000.00
each, one of whom shall sit at Hancock and receive an annual salary
of $1,000.00 and one of whom shall sit at Boonsboro and receive an
annual salary of $1,000.00, and one of whom shall sit at Williams-
port and receive an annual salary of $1,000.00, and one of whom shall
sit at Smithsburg and receive an annual salary of $1,000.00. The
magistrates at Boonsboro shall sit not less than two days or parts
thereof in each week at Sharpsburg. The magistrate at Williamsport
shall sit not less than two days or parts thereof in each week at Clear
Spring. The magistrate at Smithsburg shall serve also as substitute
magistrate for Hancock, Boonsboro, Sharpsburg, Williamsport and
Clear Spring.

One fourth of the salaries of said trial magistrates sitting in the
City of Hagerstown shall be paid by the mayor and council of Hagers-
town; the other three fourths of said salaries shall be paid by the
County Commissioners for Washington County.

110.

(c) Committing magistrates in Washington County shall receive
an annual salary of three hundred dollars ($300.00).

119.

(a) In addition to the justices of the peace and justices of the peace
at large hereinbefore specified, the Governor, by and with the advice
and consent of the Senate, shall appoint one justice of the peace at
large for each county of the State, except Anne Arundel, Montgomery,
Prince George's [and] , Kent and Washington counties, who shall
be designated "substitute trial magistrate." Such magistrate shall post
the bond required of trial magistrates and shall receive a salary of
$100.00 a year, except there shall be five substitute magistrates ap-
pointed for Baltimore County, each of whom shall receive $2,000.00
per year in addition to the compensation received when actually sit-
ting as a substitute as hereinafter provided, and except the substitute
magistrate appointed for Somerset County, who shall receive seven
hundred dollars ($700) per year in addition to the compensation re-
ceived when actually sitting as a substitute, as hereinafter provided
