(l) The members of the Sheriff's office except the Sheriff shall be
subject to the provisions of a Merit System to be established by the
Board of Public Safety, and shall be removed only for cause and
after a hearing.
(m) The Board of County Commissioners shall MAY include all of
the members of the Sheriff's office in the Maryland State Retirement
System as provided by Sections 21 to 30 of Article 73B of the
Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition), as amended from time
to time.
(n) No members of the Sheriff's office shall engage in any political
activity.
Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That all laws or parts of laws,
public general or public local, inconsistent with the provisions of this
Act are hereby repealed to the extent of any such inconsistency.
Sec. 4. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1965.

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 23 (a)
SECTIONS 23 (A) AND (D) of Article 17 of the Annotated
Code of Maryland (1964 Supplement), title "Clerks of Court",
COURTS", sub-title "General Duties of Clerks", relating to the
maximum annual salary which clerks of the county circuit courts
AND OF THE COURTS OF BALTIMORE CITY may receive.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 23 (a) SECTIONS 23 (A) AND (D) of Article 17 of
the Annotated Code of Maryland (1964 Supplement), title "Clerks of
Court", COURTS", sub-title "General Duties of Clerks", be and it is
THEY ARE hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to
read as follows:
23.
(a) The clerk of each of the circuit courts of this State, in each
county shall be entitled to receive annually a salary of not less than
$6,000.00 [and not more than $13,000.00 $15,000.00 $17,000.00} to be
fixed and determined in each instance by the Board of Public Works
of this State on the basis of the relative volume of business and
receipts in each such office. Each clerk of the court shall be entitled
to the salary fixed and no more.
(D) THE CLERK OF EACH OF THE LAW AND CRIMINAL
AND EQUITY COURTS OF BALTIMORE CITY SHALL BE EN-
TITLED TO RECEIVE ANNUALLY A SALARY OF NOT LESS
THAN $12,000 AND NOT MORE THAN $17,000 TO BE FIXED
