J. MILLARD TAWES, Governor                       1699

Executive Department
Annapolis, Maryland

GOVERNOR'S PROCLAMATION DECLARING THE RESULT

OF THE ELECTION OF NOVEMBER 3, 1964

FOR STATE-WIDE REFERENDUM

Whereas, pursuant to the provisions of Article XVI of the
Constitution of Maryland, a Petition for Referendum was filed with
the Secretary of State requiring the submission of Chapter 29 of the
Acts of the Special Session of March 11, 1964, to the voters of this
State at the election held on November 3, 1964, for their adoption or
rejection; and

Whereas, said Chapter 29, an Act to repeal and re-enact, with
amendments, certain sections of Article 49B of the Annotated Code
of Maryland (1963 Supplement) relating to Public Accommodations,
was duly submitted to the voters at said Election; and

Whereas, from the duly certified returns of said Election trans*
mitted to me, it appears that 342,715 votes were cast in favor of the
adoption of said Chapter 29 of the Acts of the Special Session of
March 11, 1964, and 301,505 votes were cast against said referred
law; and

Whereas, it appears to me that there has been a free and full
expression of the popular will of the voters of this State on the case;

Now, Therefore, I, J. Millard Tawes, Governor of Maryland,
do by this my Proclamation issued under the authority and direction
contained in Article XVI of the Constitution of Maryland, hereby
declare and proclaim that the greatest number of votes having been
cast for the adoption of said law, Chapter 29 of the Acts of the
Special Session of March 11, 1964, it shall, therefore, take effect as
enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland.

Given Under My Hand and the Great Seal of the State of
Maryland, Done at the City of Annapolis, this 1st day
of December, in the Year of Our Lord, One Thousand
Nine Hundred and Sixty-four.

(The Great Seal

of the
State of Maryland)

J. MILLARD TAWES,

By the Governor:

LLOYD L. SIMPKINS,

Secretary of State.
