to him by any of said Boards or individuals, and said attorney shall
also appear in Court to prosecute or defend all suits brought by or
against any of said Boards or individuals acting in his, their or its
official capacity.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act is hereby declared
to be an emergency measure and necessary for the immediate preser-
vation of the public health and safety, and having been passed by a
yea and nay vote supported by three-fifths of the members elected to
each of the two Houses of the General Assembly, the same shall take
effect from the date of its passage.

(House Bill 888)
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37 (c)
of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition),
title "Sheriffs," subtitle "Compensation and Duties," to increase
the compensation of the Sheriff and deputy sheriffs of Baltimore
County, and to correct a reference therein.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37 (c) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1957 Edition), title "Sheriffs," subtitle "Compensation and Duties,"
be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to
read as follows:
37.
(c) [The Sheriff of Baltimore County shall receive an annual
salary to be fixed by the County Commissioners of Baltimore County
but in no event to be less than five thousand dollars ($5,000). He
shall appoint such deputies and at such compensation as may be ap-
proved by the County Commissioners of said county] The Sheriff of
Baltimore County shall receive an annual salary of $9,500.00
$9,000.00. He shall appoint a chief deputy at an annual salary of
$7,500.00 $7,000.00 and deputy sheriffs who shall each receive an
annual salary of $6,200.00 $6,000.00 each, and shall receive such sum
for necessary expenses as shall be authorized by the County [Com-
missioners] Council of said county. The payment of such compen-
sation and expenses shall be made from the general funds of Balti-
more County, in the same manner as other general county disburse-
ments are made.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the salary increase pro-
vided in this Act shall not be applicable to the Sheriff in office on
the effective date of this Act, but the increase shall take effect with
the next term of office.
Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1963.
