AN ACT to add new Section 55A to Article 19 of the Code of Public
Local Laws of Maryland, (1930 Edition), title "St. Mary's County",
sub-title "County Commissioners", to follow immediately after
Section 55 thereof, as last amended by Chapter 799 of the Acts
of 1959, and to be under the same sub-title, authorizing the County
Commissioners of St. Mary's County to award four scholarships
annually to freshmen entering St. Mary's Seminary Junior College
and relating generally thereto.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That new Section 55A be and it is hereby added to Article 19 of the
Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland, (1930 Edition), title "St.
Mary's County", sub-title "County Commissioners", to follow im-
mediately after Section 55 thereof, as last amended by Chapter 799
of the Acts of 1959, to be under the same sub-title, and to read as
follows:
55A.
(a) The County Commissioners of St. Mary's County are author-
ized and directed to award annually four scholarships of three
hundred dollars ($300.00) each to four freshmen entering St. Mary's
Seminary Junior College. Two of the scholarships shall be awarded
to persons pursuing business courses, and two shall be awarded to
persons pursuing education courses. Upon a showing of satisfactory
performance the scholarships may be renewed each year.
(b) To be eligible for one of the said scholarships an applicant
(1) must be a resident of St. Mary's County, (2) must submit his
application to the Board of Education of St. Mary's County and
receive an eligibility rating from St. Mary's Seminary Junior College
and (3) must receive a satisfactory rating or ON a written examina-
tion prepared by St. Mary's Seminary Junior College and given by
the Board of Education of St. Mary's County at the same time the
examination for Senatorial Scholarships is given.
(c) The Board of Education of St. Mary's County and St. Mary's
Seminary Junior College will submit a list of eligible applicants to
the County Commissioners of St. Mary's County who shall select the
recipients of the scholarships each year.
(d) The County Commissioners of St. Mary's County are author-
ized to appropriate the necessary amount for these scholarships and
such amount shall not exceed forty-eight hundred dollars ($4,800.00)
annually.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1963.
