Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37(k) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1957 Edition), title "Sheriffs," subtitle "Compensation and
Duties," be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amend-
ments, to read as follows:

37.

(k) The Sheriff of Garrett County shall receive an annual salary
of $2,000 and on and after January 1, 1959, an annual salary of
$3,600 and such sum as may be set from time to time in the dis-
cretion of the County Commissioners, for expenses. He shall appoint
[a deputy who] two deputies, each of whom shall receive an annual
salary of $2,700 and one of whom shall act as warden of the jail.
The Sheriff shall be allowed extra car mileage and out-of-county
mileage at the rate of ten cents per mile. He shall be allowed
[eighty cents] one dollar per day for boarding each prisoner com-
mitted to the county jail. He may appoint a cook for said jail who
shall receive a salary of [$50] $100 per month.

SEC. 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, THAT THE ADDI-
TIONAL DEPUTY SHERIFF AUTHORIZED BY THIS ACT
SHALL BE APPOINTED AS OF JANUARY 1, 1964.

Sec. 2. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1963.

CHAPTER 117
(House Bill 177)

AN ACT to add new Section 59D to Article 19 of the Code of Public
Local Laws of Maryland (1930 Edition), title "St. Mary's County,"
subtitle "County Commissioners," proscribing the county com-
missioners of St. Mary's County from providing any payment to
the Register of Wills as additional compensation, expense account
or otherwise.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That new Section 59D be and it is hereby added to Article 19 of the
Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland (1930 Edition), title "St.
Mary's County," subtitle "County Commissioners," and to read as
follows:

59D.

The county commissioners shall neither authorize nor make any
payment from county funds or the equivalent thereof to the Register
of Wills of the county, as supplemental compensation, as reimburse-
ment for or as a fund to cover expenses, or as payment in any other
form related to the discharge of his official duties.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted,, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1963.
