four (4) years. They shall have all the powers, and perform all the
duties that are now or hereafter may be imposed on them by law,
and they shall each receive, as compensation, the sum of nine hundred
dollars per annum, and effective [January 1, 1959] June 1, 1963,
[eight hundred dollars ($800.00) per year for expenses and mileage
at the rate of five cents (5¢) per mile while attending to the official
duties but not to exceed One Hundred and Twenty-five Dollars per
year for any Commissioner] they shall each receive sixteen hundred
dollars ($1,600.00) for expenses incurred in the performance of their
duties as county commissioners. From and after January 1, 1966,
they shall each receive as compensation, the sum of twenty-six hun-
dred dollars ($2,600.00) per annum in lieu of any other compensa-
tion or expense allowance of any kind for the performance of their
duties as county commissioners.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1963.

CHAPTER 666
(House Bill 351)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37 (s)
of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1962 Supple-
ment), title "Sheriffs," subtitle "Compensation and Duties," to
increase the expense allowance of the Sheriff of Somerset County.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37 (s) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1962 Supplement), title "Sheriffs," subtitle "Compensation and
Duties," be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amend-
ments, to read as follows:

(s)

(1)  The Sheriff of Somerset County shall receive an annual salary
of three thousand six hundred dollars ($3,600.00), and an annual
allowance of [six hundred dollars ($600.00)] one thousand two hun-
dred dollars ($1,200.00)
for expenses. He shall appoint not less than
two deputies, one of whom shall be known as the chief deputy and
shall receive an annual salary of three thousand dollars ($3,000.00),
the second deputy shall receive an annual salary of two thousand
seven hundred dollars ($2,700.00). The Sheriff may appoint such
additional deputies at such compensation as may be approved by
the County Commissioners. The Sheriff or one of his deputies
shall act as county jailer and for that responsibility shall receive
annual compensation, in addition to his regular salary, in the
amount of fifteen hundred dollars ($1,500.00). The Sheriff shall
appoint a jail matron at an annual salary of six hundred dollars
($600.00).
