in this State, and for the more effectual carrying out of the
provisions of said act in relation to the removal of manumitted
slaves beyond the limits of this State; and to provide a com-
pensation to sheriffs for performing the duties therein enjoin-
ed upon them.
On motion of Mr. Hanway,
Leave was granted to the committee on Corporations to
bring in a bill to authorize the "Peach Bottom State Mining
Company of Harford county, Maryland," to issue bonds.
On motion of Mr. Wyville,
Leave was granted to the Prince George's county delega-
tion, to introduce a bill to allow the clerk of the Circuit Court
for Prince George's county, to draw and assort the names of
jurors summoned to the said court, as the same is now done
by the court.
On motion of Mr. Spence,
Leave was granted the Worcester county delegation to re-
port a bill to refund to Lydia Knox, of Worcester county, a
certain sum of money erroneously paid into the Treasury.
On motion of Mr. Burgess,
Leave was granted the St. Mary's county delegation, to in-
troduce a bill for the incorporation of the Mutual Fire Insur-
ance Company of St. Mary's and Charles counties.
On motion of Mr. Hanway,
Leave was. granted the committee on the Judiciary to in-
troduce a bill to make valid a deed from John Lewis, attorney
of Mary Turner, to Adam Hilt.
Mr. Alexander offered the following preamble and resolu-
tions.
Whereas, Article 1st, section 8, of the Constitution of the
United States, grants to Congress the power to fix the stand-
ard of weights and measures; And whereas, it is believed that
a uniform standard of weights and measures throughout the
United States would promote and better regulate the Com-
merce between the States; Therefore,
Resolved, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That our
Senators and Representatives in Congress, be and they are
hereby requested to bring this subject before that body, and
use their influence to procure the passage of an act fixing a
uniform standard of weights and measures throughout the
United States.
Resolved, That this General Assembly, most respectfully
recommend that the General Government, furnish to each
