Being upon its second reading,
The hour of 2 o'clock having arrived, the House was about
to proceed to the election of a State Treasurer, to supply the
place of Dennis Claude, the present Treasurer, when,
On motion of Mr. Mackubin,
A call of the House was ordered, and it appeared that fifty-
six members were present; and
The door keeper was sent after the absent members.
Oft motion of Mr. Lynch, of Baltimore city,
Further proceedings under the call of the House, were dis-
pensed with.
The House then proceeded to ballot for State Treasurer,
and upon the call of the roll it appeared that sixty-three mem-
bers voted, when the ballot-box was sealed and delivered by the
Speaker into the hands of Messrs. Magruder and Golds-
borough, tellers on the part of the House to join the gentle-
men who had been appointed on the part of the Senate, and
the said tellers then proceeded to the Senate Chamber for the
purpose of counting the ballots.
After an absence of sometime, the tellers on the part of the
House returned and reported that with the tellers on the part
of the Senate they had counted the ballots cast for State Trea-
surer, and that seventy-seven ballots were cast, of which
Dennis Claude, received fifty-one votes, and Edward Ham
mond received twenty-six votes;
Whereupon the Speaker declared Dennis Claude, duly elect-
ed State Treasurer for the ensuing term.
The House then proceeded to the election of a keeper of the
Chancery Records to supply the place of Lemuel Jones, the
present incumbent, when it appeared that fifty-four ballots
had been cast on the part of the House of Delegates; the
Speaker then sealed the ballot box, and delivered the same in-
to the hands of Messrs. Magruder and Goldsborough, the tel-
lers on the part of the House, who proceeded to the Senate
chamber, to join those who had been appointed on the part of
the Senate, tor the purpose of counting the ballots.
After an absence of some time, the tellers on the part of the
House returned and reported, that with the tellers on the part
of the Senate, they had counted the ballots for Keeper of the
Chancery Records, and that sixty-nine ballots were cast, of
which Lemuel Jones received fifty votes, and Louis Gassaway
received four votes, and there were fifteen blank votes, where-
upon the Speaker declared Lemuel Jones, duly elected Keeper
of the Chancery Records for the ensuing term.
