appointment of a joint select committee to consist of three members
of each House on the Maryland Hospital, to which shall be re-
ferred all matters that may be presented in relation to that Insti-
tution with instructions to examine into its condition and exigen-
ces and report by bill or otherwise on the part of this House. We
have appointed Messrs. Stirling, Lynch of Baltimore city, and
Lynch of Baltimore county, as members of said committee on the
part of this House.

Mr. Kidd offered the following order:
Ordered, That a committee of five be appointed to proceed
to Baltimore, and make a thorough examination of the entire
affairs and condition of the Maryland Penitentiary, and that they
have full power to send for persons and papers, and examine
witnesses under oath, if necessary, and make a report to this
House.

On motion of Mr. Harrington,
Leave was granted the committee on Education to be hereafter
appointed, to introduce a bill for an act for the establishment of
a uniform system of public education in the State of Maryland.
On motion of Mr. Harrington,
Leave was granted the committee on Corporations, hereafter to
be appointed, to introduce a bill for an act to incorporate the
Patapsco Steam Tug Company of Baltimore.
Mr. Kidd offered the following order :
Ordered, That the chief clerk of this House obtain through
the delegations of the several counties, and city of Baltimore, a
list of the newspapers published in said counties and city, and
forward to the editors of the same a copy of the journal of this
House;

On motion of Mr. Thruston,
Leave was granted the committee on Claims, hereafter to
be appointed, to bring in a bill to provide for the compensation of
James M. Schley for certain services performed by him, under the
appointment of the Governor, in the court of Appeals.
