The following message was received from the Senate :
By the Senate,
January 9th, 1860.
Gentlemen of the House of Delegates :
We have your message proposing the concurrence of this
body, to appoint a joint select committee to consist of three
members of each House, to proceed to Baltimore, and make
an examination of the affairs and condition of the Maryland
Penitentiary, and that they have full power to send for per-
sons and papers, and examine witnesses under oath, if neces-
sary, and report to this General Assembly. We concur there-
in, and have appointed, on the part of the Senate, Messrs.
Heckart, Graham and Lynch.

The Speaker laid before the House, the papers in the con-
tested election case of Baltimore city ;
Which were referred to the committee on Elections.
Also, the report of the Codifiers, Messrs. Otho Scott and
Hiram McCullough;
Which was read and referred to the committee on the Joint
Code, already appointed.
Also, the report of the committee appointed by the late
Legislature, to examine the proposed Code ;
Which was referred to the special committee.
