the appointment of a joint select committee, to consist of------

members of each House, to proceed to Baltimore, and make
an examination of the affairs and condition of the Maryland
Penitentiary, and that they have full power to send for per-
sons and papers, and examine witnesses, under oath, if ne-
cessary, and make a report to this House.

The officers elect of the House, who were present, were
then severally qualified by the Speaker, in the presence of the
members.

On motion of Mr. Briscoe,

Leave was granted the committee on the Judiciary, here-
after to be appointed, to report a bill entitled, an act to
enlarge the authority of the county commissioners of this
State.                                           

On motion of Mr. Miller,

The House adjourned till to-morrow morning, at half-past
ten o'clock.
