Mr. Merrick offered the following resolutions:
Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the peo-
ple of Maryland, no less than their Representatives in this Legis-
lature, delight to honor and pay just tribute to the development
of superior intellectual power wherever and whenever displayed,
because they know and feel that each and every such development
tends to advance and promote the triumph of mind over matter,
and because, in proportion to the degrees of that advance, is man
brought nearer to, and made more to resemble the beneficient and
omnipotent author of his being.
Resolved, That whilst we honor and commend all such demon-
strations of superior intellectual power, we cannot but feel pecu-
liar and especial gratification in finding amongst our own fellow-
citizens, instances of such demonstrations which blend the tri-
umph of mind over matter, with the holy and commendable ends
of humanity and benevolence.
Resolved, therefore, That we have seen with unfeigned gratifi-
cation the newly invented Railroad Break, patented by our honor-
ed fellow-citizen, the Hon. William Loughridge, who is also a
