to the Arctic zone, has, with great intrepidity and undaunted
perseverance, pushed his explorations through the frozen bar-
riers of the North, to regions hitherto unknown, making thereby
valuable additions to the geography of the American continent,
and to other departments of human knowledge; and has, in the
generous impulse which prompted and the skill which so success-
fully conducted said expedition, elicted the approval of his coun-
trymen and official acknowledgements from foreign governments,
Therefore, be it

Resolved, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the
services rendered by said expedition, and the skill, courage, and
perseverance displayed in its management, are deserving of the
highest commendation.

Resolved, That the thanks of the Senate and House of Dele-
gates of Maryland, be and the same are hereby tendered to Eli-
sha Kent Kane, and to the officers and crew who sailed under his
command.

Resolved, That we concur with the Legislature of Pennsyl-
vania in commending the results of these explorations as worthy
the attention and patronage of the General Government; and,
that the Governor be requested to transmit a copy of these
resolutions to Dr. E. K. Kane, his officers, and to the Senate and
House of Representatives of the United States,

Mr. Carper, from the Committee on Internal Improvements,
reported favorably on a bill entitled, an act supplementary to an
act entitled, an act to incorporate a company to make a turnpike
road from Middletown, in Frederick county, to the Chesapeake
and Ohio Canal, at some point thereon in the Catoctin and Blue
Ridge Mountains.

Which was read the first time.                               

On motion of Mr. Harrington,

The rules were suspended to enable him to present the follow-
ing resolution:                                   

Resolved, That a joint committee of the two Houses of the
General Assembly, consisting of two members of the House of
Delegates and one member of the Senate, be appointed for the
purpose of examining and destroying the bonds purchased by the
Treasurer for the use of the sinking fund, as also to the coupon
certificates of interest which have been cancelled.
