202              JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS. Feb. 4,

George's county relative to the wages of laborers employed on the
public roads;

Which was referred to the Prince George's county delegation.

Mr. Fiery presented a petition of citizens of Washington county
asking a modification of the act of 1840, so as to protect retail
merchants against hawkers and pedlars;

Which was referred to the Committee on Ways and Means.

Mr. Davis presented a petition from 40 citizens of Frederick
county praying for a law to protect game ;

Which was referred to the Frederick county delegation.

Mr. Harrington presented the petition of Amon Green, pray-
ing to be refunded certain taxes paid in error ;

Which was referred to the Committee on Claims.

Mr. Reichard presented a petition of the officers of the College
of St. James, Washington county, praying that the act of 1846, pro-
hibiting the giving of licenses for the sale of ardent sprits within
two miles of said College, may not be repealed ;

Which was referred to the Committee on Ways and Means.

Also, a petition of Jas. H. Piper and other citizens of Wash-
ing county, approving of the act of 1846, controlling the giving of
licenses for the sale of ardent spirits within two miles of the Col-
lege of St. James, in said county, and remonstrating against a re-
peal of the same;                                                                         

Which was referred to the Committee on Ways and Means,

Mr. Fiery presented a memorial from Isaac Nesbit, clerk of
Washington county, praying the Legislature to pass a law ex-
tending the time for the completion of his collection of fees for
1851;

Which was referred to the Committee on Ways and Means.

On motion of Mr. Loughridge,           

Leave was granted Mr. Loughridge to bring in a bill entitled, an

act to amend the act passed at January session 1852, chapter 182,

entitled, an act to incorporate the town of Sharpsburg and Miller's

addition to Sharpsburg, and also the act passed at January session

1853, chapter 342, amendatory of said act, to provide a more

effectual punishment for the violation of the ordinances of said

town;                                                                                                      

On motion of Mr. Dorsey,

Leave was granted to the Anne Arundel and Howard county

delegations to bring in a bill for the better protection of useful birds;
