OTHER PAPERS.
By Mr. Chesley:

DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION,

THE MAJOR WILLIAM THOMAS CHAPTER,

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD.

Gentlemen of the Senate:

We, the members of The Major William Thomas Chapter,
Daughters of the American Revolution, most earnestly and
respectfully petition your Honorable Body in behalf of St.
Mary's Female Seminary, located at St. Mary's City, St. Mary's
county, Maryland.

This school was established by Act of the Legislature in
1839, not only as a place of learning, but also as a fitting
monument to commemorate the first settlement of Maryland,
made by the Calverts in 1634.

By virtue of the Act of 1839, a little more than six acres
of ground were purchased for the above-named purpose, and in
due course of time buildings were erected and the school in-
augurated, and from that time to the present the work of
educating the young daughters of Maryland has been most
ably and successfully carried on.

We respectfully call your attention to the fact that this
school bears a different relation to the State from any other
school in the Commonwealth.

This property belongs absolutely to the State; the deed
conveying it to the State being on file among the land records
of St. Mary's county at Leonardtown. This was one of the
conditions of the Act of 1839. Hence it is the bounden duty
of the State to take care of its own.
