CHAPTER 585
(House Bill 908)
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Sections 200 and
201 of the Code of Public Local Laws of Howard County (1957
Edition, being Article 14 of the Code of Public Local Laws of
Maryland), title "Howard County", sub-title "Sheriff", relating to
the salary of the warden of the jail in Howard County, and remov-
ing a restriction on the approval of the county commissioners of
Howard County for the payment of certain jail expenses.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Sections 200 and 201 of the Code of Public Local Laws of
Howard County (1957 Edition, being Article 14 of the Code of Public
Local Laws of Maryland), title "Howard County", sub-title "Sheriff",
be and they are hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments,
to read as follows:
200.
The sheriff of Howard County shall appoint a warden to the jail
[and he] who shall be paid an annual salary by the county commis-
sioners of not less than two thousand dollars ($2,000.00), as the
county commissioners may prescribe, payable in monthly installments.
The said warden so appointed shall hold office at the pleasure of the
sheriff and shall be removed at any time the sheriff may elect or by
the circuit court for Howard County upon indictment and conviction
as now provided by law.
201.
It shall be the duty of the county commissioners of Howard County
to pay for all supplies and provisions necessary, in their judgment,
for the proper maintenance of all persons committed to the jail, said
supplies and provisions to be purchased by the sheriff and placed at
said jail and the bills for the same shall be presented by the sheriff
to said county commissioners for approval and payment [; provided,
however, that the said county commissioners are hereby prohibited
from approving or allowing the payment to the sheriff of any claim
for supplies and provisions furnished for the keep and board of
prisoners where the amount claimed is in excess of fifty cents per day
for each prisoner actually committed to the jail of said county], and
the said county commissioners shall furnish all fuel and light needed
for said jail.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1,1961.
