CHAPTER 584

(House Bill 903)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37 (g)
of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1960 Supple-
ment), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and Duties", re-
lating to the salaries of the Sheriff and Deputy Sheriffs of Cecil
County, and authorizing the County Commissioners of Cecil County
to buy or rent, and provide for the expenses thereof, a number
of cars for the use of the Sheriff's office of Cecil County.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37 (g) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land, (I960 Supplement), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation
and Duties", relating to the salaries of the Sheriff be and is hereby
repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

37.

(g) Commencing with the beginning of the next term of office,
the Sheriff of Cecil County shall receive an annual salary of [$4,500.]
$5,000 $5,500 and no allowance for expenses except as hereinafter
provided. The Sheriff shall appoint four deputy sheriffs [whose
salary shall be $4,000 annually]. The salary of the first deputy
sheriff shall be $4,500 annually and the salary of the other deputy
sheriffs shall be $4,200
$4,300 annually. The sheriff and deputy
sheriffs shall be entitled to an expense allowance for travel at the
rate of seven cents ($.07) per mile actually traveled, to be paid
monthly, provided, that at the beginning of each month the Sheriff
and deputy sheriffs shall file with the County Commissioners of
Cecil County an affidavit stating the speedometer readings on their
respective vehicles as of the first and last days of the preceding
month, and provided further, that fifteen percentum of the mileage
submitted for each month shall be deemed to have been for personal
use for which there shall be no compensation [.]; provided further

however that the County Commissioners of Cecil County may pur-

chase or rent, and provide for the expense of three cars for the

purposes of the Sheriff's office and in such event no expense allow-

ance for mileage as provided for in this sub-section shall be allowed.

The Sheriff's office shall also receive an appropriation of $1,500, to
be used for special investigations and employees, subject to the ap-
proval of the County Commissioners.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1961.
