Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
on June 1, 1961.

CHAPTER 44
(Senate Bill 106)
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37(a) of
Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1960 Supplement),
title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and Duties", providing for
an increase in compensation of the Sheriff of Allegany County and
for the establishment of his compensation hereafter.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37 (a) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1960 Supplement), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and
Duties", be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amend-
ments, to read as follows:
37.
(a) Allegany County.—The Sheriff of Allegany County shall re-
ceive an annual salary of [4,800] not less than $5,400.00, as fixed
by the County Commissioners from time to time.
The Sheriff shall appoint, subject to the provisions of Sections 63A
to 63-1 of the Allegany County Code (1955 Edition), sub-title
"Classified Service", five (5) deputies at an annual salary of not less
than $3,300 each; one of said deputies shall be assigned to the Sheriff
to attend the magistrate for juvenile causes to execute his process,
orders and directions, and when not so engaged, to perform such
other duties as the Sheriff may require.
The Sheriff is allowed free rent and maintenance, in addition to the
salary specified in this sub-section. Deputy sheriffs are entitled to
free meals while on duty, in addition to the salaries provided for in
this sub-section.
The Sheriff, if authorized by the County Commissioners, may em-
ploy a clerk-bookkeeper from and after July 1, 1959, pursuant to the
provisions of said sub-title "Classified Service", and at a salary as
agreed upon by the Sheriff and the County Commissioners. The clerk-
bookkeeper shall perform such duties as may be assigned by the
Sheriff, including the preparation of all reports from the Sheriff's
office for submission to the grand jury and the County Commissioners.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the increase in compensa-
tion herein provided for the Sheriff of Allegany County shall not take
effect as to the Sheriff who is in office on the effective date of this Act,
during the remainder of the term in which he then is serving. The
