Governor's Proclamation Declaring the Result of the Election
of November 8, 1960 for State-Wide Referendum
Whereas, pursuant to the provisions of Article XVI of the Consti-
tution of Maryland, a Petition for Referendum was filed with the
Secretary of State requiring the submission of Chapter 269 of the
Acts of the General Assembly of 1959, to the voters of this State at
the Election held on November 8, 1960, for their adoption or rejection ;
and
Whereas, said Chapter 269, an Act ratifying and approving the
Maryland-Virginia Potomac River Compact of 1958, was duly sub-
mitted to the voters at said Election; and
Whereas, from the duly certified returns of said Election trans-
mitted to me, it appears that 244,510 votes were cast in favor of the
adoption of said Chapter 269 of the Acts of 1959, and 204,837 votes
were cast against said referred law; and
Whereas, it appears to me that there has been a free and full ex-
pression of the popular will of the voters of this State on the case;
Now, Therefore, I, J. Millard Tawes, Governor of Maryland,
do by this my Proclamation issued under the authority and direction
contained in Article XVI of the Constitution of Maryland, hereby
declare and proclaim that the greatest number of votes having been
cast for the adoption of said law, Chapter 269 of the Acts of 1959, it
shall therefore take effect as enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland.
