(House Bill 819)
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37 (i) of
Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition),
title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and Duties", relating to
the salary of the Sheriff of Dorchester County.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37 (i) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1957 Edition), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and Duties",
be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read
as follows:
37.
(i) The Sheriff of Dorchester County shall receive an annual
salary of [$4,500] $5,200 to be paid monthly, and be allowed the
actual cost of the maintenance of automobiles and the county jail.
He shall appoint a chief deputy sheriff and one assistant deputy
sheriff who shall be paid such compensation as the County Commis-
sioners may prescribe. The Sheriff may appoint such other deputies
as may be approved by County Commissioners and who shall be
compensated as may be prescribed by the County Commissioners.
The Sheriff and his deputies shall serve all process, both civil and
criminal issued by the several trial magistrates and the Circuit
Court of Dorchester County.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the provisions of this Act
shall not be construed to extend or apply to the County Commis-
sioners SHERIFF in office on the effective date of this Act, but shall
take effect with the next term of office.
Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1961.
