any time the sheriff may elect, or by the circuit court for Howard
County upon indictment and conviction as provided by law. The
county commissioners may prescribe and provide for the payment of
the traveling and other expenses of the sheriff and [deputy sheriff]
said deputies. The sheriff may also appoint temporarily such addi-
tional deputy sheriffs as he may deem necessary for the public safety
and the county commissioners shall allow reasonable compensation
for same, but such deputies shall not serve longer than the case
actually warrants.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the provisions of this Act
shall not be construed to extend or apply to the sheriff of Howard
County in office on the effective date of this Act, but shall take effect
with the next term of office. The provisions of this Act relating to
the salaries of the deputy sheriffs of Howard County shall be effec-
tive on the effective date of this Act.

Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1961.

CHAPTER 639

(Senate Bill 538)

AN ACT to repeal Section 708 (g) of Article 66C of the Annotated
Code of Maryland (1957 Edition), title "Natural Resources", sub-
title "Oysters and Clams", and to enact new Section 708 (g) in lieu
thereof to stand in the place and stead of the section so repealed,
to prohibit the importation of certain diseased oysters for planting
on leased grounds in the waters of Worcester County, to require
inspection of oysters so imported, AT CERTAIN TIMES and to
provide penalties and confiscation of oysters for violations.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 708 (g) of Article 66C of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1957 Edition), title "Natural Resources", sub-title "Oysters
and Clams", be and it is hereby repealed, and new Section 708 (g) be
and it is hereby enacted in lieu thereof, to stand in the place of the
section so repealed, and to read as follows:

708.

(g) It shall be unlawful for any person between May first and
September thirtieth of any year to import from the waters of North-
hampton or Accomac counties, Virginia, for the purpose of planting
on leased grounds in the waters of Worcester County, any oysters or
seed oysters which are infected with oyster drills, screw borers or
their eggs. All oysters imported

County during the period above shall be inspected by the Department
