salary of [$2,400.] $5,500. He shall appoint not less than two depu-
ties who shall each receive an annual salary of [$3,900] $4,500, and
such additional deputies at such compensation as may be approved
by the county commissioners of said county. [He shall be allowed
$2,100 per year for expenses.]
(2) The County Commissioners of Worcester County are hereby
authorized to provide the following for the use of the sheriff's office
for law enforcement at an annual cost not to exceed $10,000:
(i) Not more than three FOUR automobiles, plus necessary oper-
ating expenses, including, but not limited to, gasoline, oil, insurance
and repairs;
(ii) Radio equipment;
(iii) Office supplies and equipment.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That, notwithstanding any-
thing to the contrary hereinabove in this act, the increase in salary
herein provided for the sheriff of Worcester County shall not take
effect with respect to the sheriff who is in office on the effective date
of this act, nor shall it take effect during the remainder of the term
in which he then is serving; the increased compensation for the
sheriff shall take effect for the first time as of the beginning of the
term of the sheriff of Worcester County who is elected to that posi-
tion in the regular election in the month of November, 1962; and
until the said increase in salary becomes effective, the allowance of
$2,100 per year for expenses shall be continued.
Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1961.

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37 (m)
of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1960 Supple-
ment), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and Duties",
changing the salaries of the sheriff and deputy sheriffs of Howard
County, and adding an additional deputy sheriff to said county.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37 (m) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1960 Supplement), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation
and Duties", be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amend-
ments, to read as follows:
37.
(m) The sheriff of Howard County shall receive an annual salary
of [$4,500] $5,000. He shall appoint [a deputy] two deputies who
shall receive an annual salary of [$3,500] $4,500 each and who shall
