Naval Academy Alumni Association, Inc., shall likewise be exempted
under this section.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1961.

CHAPTER 628

(Senate Bill 293)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37 (x) of
Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1960 Supplement),
title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and Duties", amending
the law with respect to the Sheriff's office of Baltimore City in
order to make changes in the Deputy Sheriffs and other assistants
in this office, providing generally for the compensation for such
deputies and assistants and making general provisions for the
salaries and expenses in the Sheriff's office of Baltimore City.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37 (x) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1960 Supplement), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and
Duties", be and the same is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with
amendments, and to read as follows:

37.

(x) In Baltimore City, the Sheriff shall receive an annual salary
of $10,000.00. He shall appoint an under-sheriff and chief deputy at
an annual salary of $7,000, one writ clerk and two assistant writ
clerks at an annual salary of $5,500 each, one stenographer and
docket clerk at an annual salary of $4,400 and [such number of dep-
uty sheriffs as may be authorized in the annual ordinance of esti-
mates in Baltimore City] thirty-four deputy sheriffs at annual sal-
aries of $5,000 each [.] and such assistants at such compensation as
shall be provided for in the annual Ordinance of Estimates of Balti-
more City.
Provision shall also be made in said ordinance for the ex-
penses of the office of the Sheriff, including the purchase and main-
tenance of motor vehicles, and the mayor and city council shall have
the same power with respect to the salaries [and expenses] of the
office of Sheriff as it has under the city charter with respect to the
salaries [and expenses] of all municipal departments [,] . [except
as otherwise herein provided.] [From and after January 1, 1960 the
compensation of the several employees in the office of the Sheriff
of Baltimore City shall be as provided from time to time in the an-
nual ordinance of estimates of Baltimore City; except that for a
period of three years following January 1, 1960, the compensation of
the respective employees shall not be less than as provided in this
sub-section.]

The Mayor and City Council shall pay monthly to the Sheriff of
Baltimore City one-twelfth of the amount provided in the Ordinance
of Estimates for the expenses of the Sheriffs office. Within thirty
days after December 31st in each and every year the Sheriff of Bal-
