WHEREAS it appears to this general affembly, that fometime in the
month of May laft the public bridge over the falls of Patapfco, on
the old road leading from Baltimore-town to Frederick-town by way
of Ellicott's lower mills, being decayed, was broken down and deftroyed; in
confequence of which, waggons and other carriages, as well as travellers, at all
times met with confiderable difficulty and danger in croffing the falls, which, in
times of frefhes, were entirely impaffable; that application was made to the
commiffioners of review of the turnpike roads in Baltimore county to build a
bridge over the faid falls where the turnpike road is laid out to crofs Patapfco a
fmall diftance below the place where the old bridge flood, which they declined
their funds being inefficient: And whereas it alfo appears, that Meffieurs Elli-
cott, and company, undertook to erect, and have actually erected, a ftrong and
fubftantial bridge over the faid falls at the place where the old road croffes, and
that the difference in diftance is no more than twenty-two perches, and that the
fame was built at a much lefs expence than a bridge equally ftrong and
fubftantial could be built for over the falls where the new road is intended to
crofs ;
