prefcribed by the act to which this is a fupplement, it fhall be, and is hereby
declared to be, the duty of the laft veftrymen of fuch parifh to call a meeting of the
inhabitants thereof, on any day thereafter, by advertifement fet up at the door of
the parifh church of fuch parifh, to make choice of fuch veftrymen and church-
wardens, on which day the inhabitants of faid parifh being entitled to vote, or
fach of them as fhall attend, fhall proceed to elect veftrymen and churchwardens,
who, when elected, fhall take the oaths, and qualify themfelves, in the manner
prefcribed by the act, entitled, An act for the eftablimment of felect veftries.

XVIII.

II. And be it enacted, That in all cafes where the inhabitants of any parifh of
this ftate have negleded to meet and choofe veftrymen and churchwardens at the
time prefcribed by the original aft, and the veftrymen have continued to act un-
der their former appointment, their proceedings fhall be as good and valid as if
they had been elected agreeably to the directions of the aforefaid act.

CHAP. XIX.
An ACT for the weighing of hay and cording of wood in Elkton,
Caecil county.

WHEREAS it is reprefented to this general affembly, that great incon-
veniences have arifen to the inhabitants of Elkton, Caecil county,
from the want of hay-fcales for the weighing of hay and other forage,
and alfo from the want of fome regulation in the cording of wood brought to faid
market for fale; therefore,

Preamble.

II. Be it enacted, by the General Affembly of Maryland, That the commif-
iioners of the town of Elkton, or a majority of them, for the time being, fhall
have full power and authority, and they are hereby direded within one year from
the paffing of this act, to ered on the public lot in Elkton, called the Market-
lot, a houfe convenient for hay-fcales, and caufe to be erected therein a pair of
good and fufficient hay-fcales, with weights, for the weighing of all hay and
long forage that may be hereafter brought for fale to faid market.

III. And be it enacted, That the faid commiffioners, or a majority of them,
fhall meet on the firft Monday of March, feventeen hundred and ninety-fix, and
on the fame day annually during the continuance of this act, and then and there
examine faid fcales and weights, and, if neceffary, have them adjufted, and as
foon thereafter as convenient appoint a diligent and honeft perfon, an inhabitant
of the faid town, to take charge of faid hay-fcales and weights, who, as often as
required, fhall weigh all hay, or other long forage that may be brought for
fale to faid market, or fold within faid town, who, before he enters on his
office, fhall take the following oath, or affirmation, before a magiftrate, to wit:
"I, A. B. do fwear, or affirm, that I will weigh all hay or long forage that I
" may be required to weigh, without favour, affection or partiality, to the beft of
* my fkill and knowledge;" which oath, or affirmation, fo taken, fhall be enter-
ed among the proceedings of the commiffioners of the faid town, and fhall alfo
give bond, with fecurity if required, in the fum of two hundred pounds current
money, for the faithful difcharge of his duty while in office; and the faid weigh-
er fhaii receive from the purchafer of all hay, or other long forage, fuch fum for
every hundred weight of hay or forage fo weighed as the faid commiffioners, or a
majority of them, fhall dired, not exceeding eight-pence per hundred.

IV. And be it enacted, That all hay and forage, fo weighed by the faid weigh-
er, fhall be by the long hundred, that is, allowing one hundred and twelve net
pounds for every hundred weight thereof.

V. And be it enacted, That no perfon fhall purchafe within the faid town any
hay brought by land or water until the fame fhall have been previoufly weighed
by the weigher aforefaid, under the penalty of twenty fhillings, to be paid to the
faid commiffioners for the ufe of the faid town, and may be recovered as fmall
debts are by law recoverable.
