CHAP.
XXIX.

Out of any
money re-
ceived, &c.

III. And be it enacted, That fuch additional allowance to be made to the faid
William Benfon as aforefaid, fhall be paid by the faid commiffioners out of any
fum or fums of money they may have received in virtue of the act of affembly
aforefaid, over and above the fum of thirteen hundred pounds already agreed to
be paid to the faid William Benfon; and if a fufficient fum of money fhall not
remain in their hands, for the purpofe aforefaid, it fhall and may be lawful for
the faid commiffioners to certify to the juftices of the levy court of Caroline
county, at their next fitting, what further fum of money will be neceffary.

IV. And be it enacted, That the juftices of Caroline county, upon their re-
ceiving fuch certificate from the faid commiffioners as aforefaid, fhall, and
they are hereby authorifed and directed, immediately to affefs and levy (as a
part of the county levy, and to be collected by the fheriff of Caroline county in
the fame manner and under the fame penalties and obligations,) upon the affeffa-
ble property of their county, the fum of money thus certified by the faid com-
miffioners, together with a commiffion of four per cent, for the collection thereof.

V. And be it enacted, That the faid fheriff fhall, on or before the firft day of
December next enfuing the affeffment thereof by the juftices of Caroline county,
collect the fum of money aforefaid, and pay the fame to the commiffioners afore-
faid, or fuch perfon as they fhall authorise to receive the fame, to be by them ap-
plied forthwith in the manner prefcribed by this act; provided however, that the
faid William Benfon fhall complete and finifh the faid court-houfe, in the man-
ner ftipulated by his own agreement, in fuch time as the commiffioners fhall think
reafonable and fhall allow him, and that the faid William Benfon fhall not be
entitled to receive the faid fum of money until the faid building fhall be finished,
but the faid commiffioners may make fuch advances of money to him as they
fhall, in their difcretion, think proper.

VI. And whereas it appears from feveral acts of affembly heretofore made,
that confiderable fums of money and quantities of tobacco, have from time to
time been levied on the inhabitants of Caroline county for the purpofe of build-
ing a court-houfe and gaol in the faid county, and the commiffioners aforefaid
were authorifed by the act of affembly above mentioned, to demand, fue for,
recover and receive the fame, of the performs chargeable by law with the payment

thereof, or in whofe hands the fame might be, Be it further enacted, That
the faid commiffioners fhall make out and lay before the general affembly, at their
next feffion, a ftatement of the monies received and expended by them by virtue
of the act of affembly above mentioned, and what balances fhall be then remain-
ing in the hands of the feveral perfons chargeable with the payment thereof.

C H A P. XXX.
An ACT to eftablifh a bank in the diftrict of Columbia.

WHEREAS the agricultural and commercial interefts of this ftate may
be promoted, and the preparations for the permanent refidence of
congrefs facilitated, by the eftablifhment of a bank within the terri-
tory of Columbia, and within the prefent jurisdiction of this ftate ;.

II. Be it enacted, by the General Affembly of Maryland, That a fubfcription
therefor, to confift of ten thoufand fhares of one hundred dollars each, be open-
ed, under the care of Samuel Blodget, junior, William Deakins, junior, Uriah
Forreft, John Mafon, James Maccubbin Lingan, Francis Lowndes, Marfham
Warring, Peter Caffanave, William Burrell Magruder, Jofeph Forreft, Thomas
Peter, John Templeman and Benjamin Stoddert.

ner the fums
fubfcribed are
to be paid, &c.

III. And be it enacted, That the fums fo fubfcribed fhall be paid in the fol-
lowing manner, viz. Every fubfcriber, at the time of fubfcribing, fhall pay
two dollars for each fhare by him fubfcribed, to the perfon or perfons appointed
by this act to take in fubfcriptions, and the remaining ninety eight dollars for
each fhare fhall be paid to the prefident and directors of the bank, elected agree-
