fhall die, refufe, neglect, or be incapable to act; and if any three or more of the
faid commiffioners fhall die, refufe, neglect, or be incapable to act, the governor,
with the advice of the council, may appoint fome perfon or perfons in his or their
place or places, fo as to make up the remaining vacancies in manner aforefaid.

LIII.

VI. And be it further enacted, That the faid commiffioners fhall be allowed
the fum of ten fhillings per day for every day they fhall attend as commiffioners
aforefaid; and that the furveyor fhall be allowed the fum of fifteen fhillings
per day for every day he fhall be employed by the commiffioners aforefaid, for the
purpofe aforefaid.

VII. And be it enacted, That the feveral proprietors of the lots in the faid
town fhall, at their joint expence, pay to the faid commiffioners the aforefaid fum
of ten fhillings per day, to be levied on their property, to pay the faid allowance
to the commiffioners, and all other expences, in equal proportions to the value
of the property held by them feverally, to be adjudged by the faid commimoners.

An ACT for the relief of the poor of Baltimore-town, in Balti-

WHEREAS a corporation capable of receiving donations, of eftablifh-
ing a productive fund, and of applying the fame to the relief of per-
fons in diftrefs, or in Want of the means of fupport and fubfiftence,
would tend to leffen that bulk of human miferies fo peculiar to large cities, while
at the fame time it would open to the charitably difpofed a place where they
might lodge their donations, in the fure hope of their being diftributed fo as to
anfwer the greateft poffible good; therefore,

Preamble.

II. Be it enacted, by the General Affembly of Maryland, That one clergy-
man, minifter, preacher, paftor or prieft, of each and every fect, order, or reli-
gious denomination, refident in Baltimore-town, now having, or that hereafter
may have, a congregation and church, or houfe of worfhip, within the faid town,
are hereby declared to be one community, corporation and body politic, for ever,
by the name of The Corporation for the Relief of the Poor and Diftreffed of
every Sect or Religious Denomination whatever, and by the fame name they and
their fucceffors fhall and may have perpetual fucceffion, and fhall and at all times
hereafter be perfons able and capable in law to purchafe, take, have and enjoy,
to them and their fucceffors, in fee, or for any lefs eftate or eftates, in land, tene-
ments, rents, annuities, ftock of the bank of the United States, or any other
bank, debt of the United States, or debt of any of the dates, penfions and other
hereditaments, within this ftate, by gift, bargain, fale of devife, of any perfoa
or perfons, bodies politic or corporate, capable to make the fame; and fuch
lands, tenements, rents, annuities, ftock of the bank of the United States, or
any other bank, debt of the United States, or debt of any of the ftates, penfions
and other hereditaments, or any lefs edates, rights or intereds, of or in the fame,
at their pleafure to alien, fell, transfer or leafe, in fuch manner as they may judge
moft conducive for aiding and furthering the charitable defigns of this incorpora-
tion, and according to the nature of fuch edate as they may have in the fame;
and alfo, that they and their fucceflbrs may take and receive any fum or fums of
money, and any kind, manner or portion of goods and chattels that may or fhall
be given, fold or bequeathed, unto them, by any perfon or perfons, bodies poli-
tic or corporate, capable to make a gift, fale, or bequed thereof, and to employ
the fame. in providing poor-houfe keepers and others, with fuel and neceffaries,
efpecially during the winter and fcafons of uncommon didrefs, or in making
fuch provifion for them as may be thought mod conducive to alleviate their dif-
trefs; and further, to employ the fame in providing a capital fufficient to produce
an yearly intered, revenue or income, for anfwering the faid charitable and other
declared purpofes of this corporation; provided always, that the faid annual reve-
nue or income of the faid corporation does not exceed two thoufand pounds cur-
rent money; provided alfo, that all gifts, legacies or donations, in real eftate of
