of the length of twenty-eight inches, and feventeen inches diameter at the head,
and twenty-one inches at the bilge; all pork barrels imported or brought in as
aforefaid fhall be made of good feafoned oak materials, well made, tightened with
twelve hoops, fufficiently nailed in manner aforefaid, fufficient to hold pickle, and
of the following dimenfions, to wit: The ftavcs of the length of twenty-eight
inches, and feventeen and an half inches diameter at the head, and twenty-one
and an half inch at the bilge: This act not to affect fifh barrels made before
the firft day of April, feventeen hundred and ninety-three.

C H A P.
XLVI.

V. And be it enacted, That all perfons packing and curing beef or pork as
aforefaid, except for the ufe of his or their family, fhall put in the faid barrels
the full quantity of two hundred and twenty pounds neat weight; and that if any
perfon or perfons fhall pack any beef or pork barrel with a lefs quantity than is
directed by this act to be contained in the barrels of the fize and dimenfions afore-
faid, he or they fhall forfeit, if the deficiency be three pounds, fix-pence current
money, if fix pounds, one fhilling and fix-pence, and fix-pence per pound for
every pound deficient above fix pounds.

VI. And be it enafted, That all and every barrel of beef, pork and fifh,
brought to the faid town for fale or exportation, fhall be fubmitted to the view
and examination of the infpector fo as aforefaid nominated and appointed, who
fhall fearch and try the fame, by opening one of the heads and examining whether
it be honeftly and well packed, and alfo whether it be found, good, and of fuf-
ficient weight; and if the faid infpector fhall judge the fame to be merchantable
according to the directions of this act, he fhall brand every fuch barrel on the
quarter with the word George-town, with a public brand-mark to be provided
for that purpofe, and alfo the word Pork, Beef or Fifh, as the cafe may be, for
which trouble he the faid infpector fhall have and receive of the owner of fuch
beef, pork or fifh, the fum of fix-pence current money for each cafk, and no
more; and every barrel of beef, pork or fifh, imported, brought into George-
town, or cured in faid town, from any part of this ftate, or any of the United
States, or from any foreign part, fhall be infpected immediately on the fame being
branded, and if the infpector fhall judge the fame to be merchantable, he fhall
brand every fuch barrel on the quarter with the word George-town, in manner
aforefaid, and the word Pork, Beef or Fifh, as the cafe may be, as aforefaid.

VII. And be it enacted, That no infpector fhall brand any barrel of beef,
pork or fifh, which he thinks unfound or unmerchantable according to the true
intent and meaning of this act, but fhall caufe the fame to be marked on the
bilge with a broad arrow, or fecure it for a further examination if required ;
which examination the owner fhall procure to be made within the fpace of four
days, and the infpector fhall and may demand and receive from the owner or
owners thereof the fame rates and prices as if the fame had been branded.

VIIL And be it enacted, That when any perfon fhall think himfelf aggrieved
through the judgment or want of fkill of the faid infpector in rejecting the faid
falted provifions as unmerchantable, it fhall and may be lawful for fuch perfon
to apply to a juftice of the peace, who fhall, at the charge of the complainant,
iffue his warrant, directed to three indifferent perfons well flailed in the goodnefs,
quality and well curing, of falted beef, pork, and fifh of every kind, to review
and examine the fame; which faid three perfons, fo as aforefaid appointed, fhall
take the fame oath (or affirmation if a quaker, menonift or dunker) as by this
act is herein after direfted to be taken by every infpector of falted provifions, and
fhall carefully view and examine the fame, and if they, or any two of them, fhall
pafs and declare the fame to be merchantable, then and in fuch cafe the faid in-
fpector fhall erafe out the broad arrow, and put fuch brand on the faid falted pro-
vifions as they, or any two of them, fhall adjudge and determine, and repay to
the faid complainant the faid coft; but if, on fuch review, the judgment of the
faid infpector fhall be confirmed, then and in fuch cafe the faid owner of fuch
falted provifions fhall pay the coft of fuch review.
