C H A P. XLV.

Paffed De-
cember 22.

Preamble.

An ACT for the benefit of William Charles Neill.
WHEREAS William Charles Neill, by his petition to this general af-
fembly, hath fet forth, that he removed with his family from Mary-
land, the place of his nativity, to the Delaware ftate, about two
years ago, where he at prefent refides, and having completed the bufinefs which
occafioned his removal, is now defirous to return to Maryland, but the laws, he
apprehends, will not permit him to bring with him the negroes which belong to
him, and which he fo lately carried out of this ftate; and prays that he may, on
his return to Maryland, be permitted to bring with him his flaves, with their
iffue; and this affembly thinking the prayer of the faid petitioner reafonable,
therefore,

II. Be it enacted, by the General Affembly of Maryland, That it fhall and may
be lawful for the faid William Charles Neill, and he is hereby authorifed and
empowered, to bring into this ftate all and every of the laid negroes, together with
their increafe fince their removal as aforefaid; and the right and title of the faid
William Charles Neill, of, in and to the faid flaves, and every of them, when
removed into this ftate, fhall be as firm and effectual, to all intents and purpofes,
as if no law to the contrary had been made: Provided neverthelefs, that this ad,
nor any thing therein contained, fhall be taken or conftrued in any manner to
affect any claim which any perfon or perfons may have againft the faid William
Charles Neill for any of the faid flaves, nor fhall it be taken or conftrued in any
manner to affect any claim which the faid flaves, or any of them, may have to
their freedom, from any other caufe than being brought into this ftate.

C H A P. XLVI.

cember 22.

An ACT for the infpection of falted provifions exported and im-
ported from and to the town of George-town, in Montgomery
county.

Preamble.

WHEREAS it is reprefented to this general affembly, that great impo-
fitions daily arife from the exportation and fale of unfound falted pro-
vifions; and there not being any regulations for the prevention of
fuch frauds, therefore,

II. Be it enacted, by the General Affembly of Maryland, That the mayor,
recorder and aldermen, of George-town, or the major part of them, fhall meet
between the firft and twentieth days of March next, and between the firft and
twentieth days of March yearly and every year thereafter, during the continuance
of this ad, and then nominate and appoint a perfon of good repute, and fkilful
in the goodnefs, quality and well curing, of falted beef, pork, and fifh of every
kind, to be infpedor of falted provifions within the laid town for the year
enfuing.

III. And be it enacted, That in cafe of the death of fuch officer fo appointed,
or his refufal or negled to act, the faid mayor, recorder and aldermen, or the
major part of them, fhall, as foon as conveniently may be thereafter, meet toge-
ther, and appoint one other fuch perfon as aforefaid in the ftead of the perfon fo
dying, or refufing or negleding to ad, for the refidue of the year; and if the
faid mayor, recorder and aldermen, fhall neglect and omit to nominate and ap-
point fuch officer, then the governor and council may appoint fuch officer, who
fhall be qualified agreeably to the directions of this ad, and have the like power
and authority as if he had been by the faid mayor, recorder and aldermen, nomi-
nated and appointed.

foned oak, &c.

IV. And be it enacted, That from and after the firft day of April next, all
beef and fifh barrels brought to, or imported into, George-town, from any part
of this ftate, fhall be made of good feafoned oak materials, well made, nailed
with four nails in each chine hoop, and three nails in each upper bilge hoop,
fufficient to hold pickle, and of the following dimenfions, viz. The ftaves to be
