for each mile over five miles for going to and returning from the
court, once in each term, to be paid by the counties, respectively, in
which courts are held. Jurors in Baltimore City shall receive such
compensation as shall be provided in the ordinance of estimates of
said City each year. In Baltimore County, jurors shall receive per
diem compensation in such amounts as shall be set, from time to time,
by the Judges of the Circuit Court of Baltimore County. Jurors in
Frederick County shall receive at least eight dollars per day for each
and every day they shall attend the Circuit Court of Frederick
County as jurors and a reasonable amount in the discretion of the
County Commissioners, for each mile going to and returning from
the Court.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1959.

(House Bill 89)
AN ACT to add new Section 8A to Article 89B of the Annotated
Code of Maryland (1957 Edition), title "State Roads", sub-title
"In General", authorizing the State Roads Commission to acquire
land along U. S. Route 40 between Hancock and the Pennsylvania
line in Garrett County for the purpose of providing park and
recreational areas along said U. S. Route 40, such areas to be
developed by the Department of Forests and Parks with the State
Roads Commission to have authority to construct and maintain
access roads in the same.
Whereas, U. S. Route 40 from Hancock in Washington County
westward through Allegany and Garrett Counties affords some of the
most scenic and picturesque mountain scenery in the eastern section
of the United States, and
Whereas, This section of Route 40 is ripe in early American
tradition and history,—it having been used by George Washington
in 1753 on his mission to the French on the Ohio River and by the
Englishman Braddock in his ill fated attack on Fort Duquesne in
1755. The historical significance of this section of highway undoubt-
edly played a major role in the determination by the early Govern-
ment of the United States that it should be the first road to receive
Federal funds to aid in its construction and improvement, and
Whereas, This scenic and historic route, if improved by adequate
highways, parks and recreational areas, will be the source of pleasure
and enjoyment for tourists from both within and without the State,
and
